Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval took a page from NJ Gov. Chris Christie on Monday saying that while he supports federal legislation to legalize and regulate online gambling he would oppose a bill which would regulate online poker within the Silver State.
In an interview on Nevada Newsmakers, Sandoval said that he felt the current bill would be in conflict with the Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and that he doesn't "want the state to be in contravention of the federal law."
Nevada Assembly Bill 258 has had a single hearing, and no further action has taken place on the legislation. Assembly Chairman William Horne, who introduced the bill last month, says that he still plans to push the bill through regardless of what position the governor takes.
The majority of land-based casinos in Nevada have been very vocal about their preference for federal intervention rather than Nevada-only law but despite promising developments at the state level Congress looks no closer to passing a bill to regulate online gambling. Despite their open opposition to the bill many major casino companies have already announced partnership deals with major online poker networks which leads us to believe they are preparing themselves should legislation come to pass.
