The Nevada gaming industry has been struggling to recover from the recent recession and one of the ways the ways they are looking to increase revenue is to attract more visitors from China. The chairman of Nevada Commission on Tourism Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki said that the state has been trying to woo China residents to visit the states for some time now.
"We're approaching a million guests in the U.S. from China and a great portion of these Chinese visitors come to Nevada," said Krolicki. "These hundreds of millions of Chinese have the resources to travel abroad so it's the fastest growing outbound tourism market in the world."
According to the U.S. Travel Association, if a million travelers from China visit the U.S, they would spend an estimated $7.2 billion and create 66,600 jobs. Nevada recognizes the tourism potential so they have become the first state in the nation to negotiate a tourism license with the Chinese government. Advertisements and brochures for Nevada and specifically Las Vegas can now be seen at travel agencies throughout China and Nevada is hoping that all their efforts will pay off.
"The Asians are definitely a segment we've really upped the ante for and want to continue to focus on perhaps more so than we have in the past," said Senior vice president of gaming at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, Jim Roets.
Casinos across the state have marketing teams specifically focused on attracting Chinese visitors and every year they appear to host even larger and more elaborate Chinese New Year's celebrations.
"The economy has been challenged in these last few years, but one of the greatest growth prospects for tourism to Nevada is Asia and China in particular," said Krolicki.
Krolicki pointed the Nevada Commission on Tourism already has two offices in China and said that he feels expanding overseas is a good opportunity to directly market to the Chinese population.
