Despite the recent crackdown on online poker it appears that Nevada Assembly Bill 258, the bill which would legalize intrastate poker in Nevada, is still alive and kicking. According to reports, the Nevada Resort Association still plans to push for the bill's passage saying that the policy should stand apart from the controversy over the recent indictments.
"If these companies (under indictment) had never existed, it would still be good policy for the state of Nevada," Billy Vassiliadis, lobbyist for the NRA, told reporters. He noted that the recent event "hasn't made it easy. It was easier Thursday," but said that he still hopes to see the bill pass.
The bill in its present form will not allow players to take part in online poker until, "a federal law providing for the licensure of Internet poker is signed into law or the United States Department of Justice advises the (Gaming Control) Board or (Gaming) Commission that it is permissible to license Internet poker operations." So even if it passes it could be months or years before players could benefit from the measure. Just the same it is certainly a step in the right direction and a very good sign that federal legislation could still be on its way.
