Pennsylvania gamblers may soon begin receiving statements from casinos. A new bill which would require casinos to send out monthly statements of gamblers' wins and losses has passed the state House Gaming Oversight Committee and will now go before the full House.
The gambling industry has opposed the change saying that it would be expensive ($400,000 or more per month) and unnecessary. Fred Buro, general manager of Presque Isle Downs, said that the information is already available to any gambler who uses a casino's player's club or rewards card and that gamblers can request a statement at anytime. Supporters of the bill however, argue that the statements could easily be sent out along with casinos' regular promotional mailings and that it would do a lot to stop people from crossing the line from responsible gambling to compulsive gambling.
It is very unlikely that the program would do much to deter compulsive gamblers from playing at the casinos and there is no evidence that the legislation would have any positive benefit for problem gamblers but it could make it easier for gamblers to keep track of their wins and losses for tax purposes if nothing else.
As of this article being written, no date has been set for a vote on the bill.
