New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to make his decision on an online gambling bill this Thursday, and online gamblers are giddy with anticipation. Should Christie approve the bill it will not only alter the future of Internet gambling in New Jersey but it could have a ripple effect on states across the nation.
"As soon as the first state takes the step to regulate online gambling, it will sweep across the nation much like what happened with the land-based casinos in the past decade," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "Nobody wants to the be the first to sign a controversial bill, but once the seal is broken, there likely will be widespread acceptance of online gambling by lawmakers in the US.
If on the other hand Christie bows out to political pressure within his party, it may be California that becomes the first state to legalize the practice. California is currently debating two separate bills, one that would regulate only online poker, and the other would authorize full-scale online casinos.
