New Jersey is on track to becoming the first state to legalize online gambling. It has specifically included online casino gambling in its most recent gaming proposal which could spell good news for online players across the Garden State. In many other states online gambling proposals have only included online poker or sports betting, which in many ways makes it a harder sell but New Jersey took a more widespread approach to the bill.
State Senator Ray Lesniak was the one to introduce this piece of legislation back in January and things have been moving right along. Lesniak's proposal opens up online gambling to land based casinos in the area. The proposal states that the intra-state online gambling industry would be regulated through a yet to be established Division of Internet Wagering under the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. Since the Commission is located in Atlantic City and the land casinos are located in the same place, it would just make sense to establish the Division of Internet Wagering there.
New Jersey lobbyists recently participated in the Global iGaming Summit & Expo. While there, one of the lobbyists stated, "The thrust of the bill is to unite the brick and mortar existing licensees with online gaming interests; to join them together so they can complement each other. We're going to be the first state in the nation to have this bill passed. I'm confident in that."
Let's see if the state can pull it off. If they do, it could make history and perhaps start a national trend that could benefit players everywhere. Hopefully it will push the federal government to speed up its own piece of online gambling legislation. Many casinos including Harrah's are waiting for just that.
