Major breaking news has just come out of the US state of New Jersey. There, legislation has passed which makes them the leaders in the United States in the race for online gambling legalization. On Monday, January 10, 2011 New Jersey claimed victory in the State Assembly, passing the bill legalizing online gambling by a vote of 63-11.
The new law grants permission to casinos in Atlantic City to provide online gambling for residents of the state. The bill authorizes "poker, roulette, baccarat, blackjack, craps, big six wheel, slot machines, minibaccarat (sic,), red dog, pai gow, and sic bo; any variations or composites of such games, provided that such variations or composites, and any above listed game or variation or composite of such game be offered through internet wagering."
Now, the only tiny thing that probably won't, but could hold back the passage of the legislation, is where it's headed next- to Gov. Chris Christie for signing. The governor has 45 days to sign the bill into law, conditionally veto it, or veto it absolutely. The latter of those would be the worst case scenario and because the state is suffering from a lack of revenue, it is highly unlikely that Christie will so this as it would provide a massive boost in that department. If no decision is made by the governor during the 45 days, it will automatically become law. And finally, he may decide to veto it conditionally which means it would go back to the drawing board for revisions before getting another chance.
Let's keep our fingers crossed that the governor will either sign it into law, or leave it alone. The bill is set to go into effect July 4, 2011 so unless a change is made to the final bill, US players from the state of New Jersey could be celebrating more than Independence Day come July.
Hopes are high and the time is right for this to happen. We here at Casinofan will keep you informed of what happens next.
