New Jersey's gamblers could be enjoying their favorite games online in 2012 if Senator Raymond Lesniak is successful in getting the bill signed into law before the legislative session ends on January 9.
Last year the state's Governor, Chris Christie, vetoed the bill noting that it would be in violation of federal regulations but thanks to a recent change of heart from the US Department of Justice and improvements made to the bill, Senator Lesniak believes it has a fighting chance.
The bill has been changed to require gambling websites to base their servers in Atlantic City bringing thousands of potential new jobs and much needed economic benefits to the state.
If the bill get the all clear from the Senate and General Assembly Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committees on Thursday, January 5, 2012, it will be brought both houses for floor votes on Monday. This is the last legislative voting chance before the session ends.
"We could be the Silicon Valley of internet gaming and it could mean billions of dollars in revenue for Atlantic City, and thousands of jobs," said Lesniak. "It's the wave of the future. It's going to come and we can be in the lead on it."
Lesniak says that we should know by Tuesday whether or not the bill will have sufficient support to be signed into law as the current legislative session comes to a close.
"I got it through last year with overwhelming support," he said. As for now, we will just have to wait and see if he can do the same this time.
