New Legislation Could Allow for Vegas-style Resorts in Florida

altFlorida may be looking to lure more gamblers to the Sunshine state with giant casino resorts. Two Florida senators filled legislation that would permit five mammoth Vegas-style casino hotels to be built in the tourist-dependent state. The hotels would have 1,000 rooms and 500,000 sq. feet of meeting space each and could lure as many as 5 million new visitors from out of state each year.

The bill was introduced by Sen. Dennis Jones (R-Seminole) and Sen. Maria Sachs (D-Delray Beach) who run the State Senate Regulated Industries Committee, which oversees gambling. It is their hope that the new casinos would not only bolster the gambling industry but also would allow the state to make headway into the trade show industry.

As with any gambling legislation, the bill does have its opponents. The usual anti-gambling entourage is out in full force saying that they do not want to expand the "vice industry" and that gambling will result in immoral behavior throughout the state. The only source of serious opposition legislators face comes from Florida's Seminole Tribe which owns seven of Florida's eight casinos. According to the Sun-Sentinel they plan to fight the legislation in order to keep rivals out of the Florida market.
