The Russian Media reports that a building in the North Korean embassy in Moscow is under suspicion of being used as an illegal casino. According to Izvestia, the North Korean government rented out an administrative building adjoining the embassy to a company which claimed it would use the building as a cafeteria when in fact it has apparently served as the home to a casino since December.
Russia banned casinos in major cities in July 2009 and since then casino operators have been forced underground. According to Izvestia foreign embassies have become a popular venue for illegal casinos because they are immune from jurisdiction.
Citing experts, Izvestia said that there was no way that North Korean diplomats would have been unaware that their building was being used as a casino. They claim that it is far more likely that the North Korean's purposefully allowed the casino to be build in order to earn foreign currency for the regime. The North Korean Embassy has of course denied the allegations, saying in a statement on Thursday, "There has never been any casino on the premises of our embassy."
It is unclear whether the Russian government will further pursue the matter.
