On Friday the US Department of Justice released a letter to Senator Harry Reid and Senator Jon Kyl which has proven to be one of the nicest Christmas presents the online gambling industry has seen in along time. The Obama Administration has cleared up the grey area of the wire act by announcing that it is only sports betting that is illegal and that other forms of gambling do not violate the wire act of 1961.
This new clarification means that states are now able to legalize online poker and other forms of non-sports betting related online gambling which is a breath of fresh air for the online gambling industry, theplayers and states which could soon reap in the benefits of billions in added tax revenue.
Until Friday's news, all forms of internet gambling were considered illegal under the Wire Act of 1961, which banned any wagering via telecommunications from state to state or internationally.
"The United States Department of Justice has given the online gaming community a big, big present," said gaming law expert, Professor I. Nelson Rose.
Poker Players Alliance Executive Director, John Papas said, "This will provide policy makers at both the state and federal level with the legal confidence to move forward with licensing and regulation of onlinepoker and other non-sporting activity within their respective jurisdictions. However, it is our hope that our federal policy makers see this as an incentive to move quickly to enact federal licensing andregulation before various states produce a mix of individual state schemes that may not be the best model to serve consumers."
We here at Casinofan.com are definitely very excited to see where this new announcement leads as we begin a new year. As of right now, it looks like this could very well be the move that gets the ball rollingfor states to work together and regulate online gaming in the US... maybe even at a federal level!
As always, please stay tuned for more of the latest online gaming news, special promotional offers and important player updates.
