One Last Push For Online Gambling Legislation Held In Washington DC

Congress kicked off their "lame duck" session in Washington, DC on Monday and unless something significant happens this may be the last hoorah for internet gambling legislation. The Republicans will take control of the House in January and despite their supposed support of the free market the Republican Party has long been in fierce opposition to a legalized and regulated system which would protect consumers.

Hoping to influence President Obama as he works on a plan to help balance our nation's budget, the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative has been touting the budgetary effects of a legalized and regulated internet gambling industry. The national debt is projected to be $1.42 trillion for 2009 and licensed internet gambling, could bring in well over $40 billion of much needed tax revenue over a period of ten years.

The Initiative has been asking online poker players and internet gamblers alike to send an e-mail to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it showing their support for a legalized system.

To make things easy, the group has even provided a sample e-mail that can be accessed from their website. It reads in part, "Given our nation's economic challenges, it is time to replace a failed attempt at prohibition with a regulated environment that allows online gambling activity, protects consumers, and uses the much-needed new revenue generated to pay off our nation's debt."

The full e-mail goes on to trumpet legislation put forth by Congressmen Barney Frank and Jim McDermott which would legalize and regulate the online gambling industry, HR 2267 and its companion bill HR 4976. And it points out that despite laws like the UIGEA, it's estimated that Americans continue to wager $100 billion annually online in an underground marketplace which provides players with few protections.

Show your support for a regulated online gaming industry and email the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility today!
