Looks like online casino Piggs Peak will continue its lengthy legal battle against a North Gauteng High Court ruling which banned online gambling in South Africa late last month. The casino has been granted leave to appeal the ruling, but the Gauteng Gambling Board is already investigating whether or not they can seize profits made by the site since the court's ruling should their appeal fail.
"Even though the leave to appeal was granted by the court, the games haven't been tested against South African standards and the games are not licensed by South African gaming regulators which put online gamblers at risk of being manipulated," said Lucky Lukhwareni, the head of legal services at the Gauteng Gambling Board.
In August the court found that it was possible for gamblers in Gauteng to connect to the Piggs Peak online casino and though the site's servers are based in Swaziland the court felt that the fact that players could get in was enough to determine that the site illegally operating the area. Online gambling operators and anyone who advertises online gambling in South Africa could a steep fine of R10-million or 10 years in jail, or both so the matter is of great concern to everyone involved.
Hopefully Piggs Peak has a very good lawyer.
