 Microgaming and 888 Holdings are teaming up to create a joint Internet poker network to be deployed in the French gaming market. They chose poker since French gambling laws do not currently allow casino gambling on Internet sites.
"This deal marks a turning point in the industry with big networks collaborating in newly regulated markets to create a shared pool of liquidity, benefiting customers and assisting in rapidly generating large poker networks in each market," said Gigi Levy, CEO of 888.
"We are delighted to be working with 888 to deliver a poker solution to the French market," added Microgaming head Roger Raatgever. "We look forward to combining our wealth of experience and knowledge to bring the highest global standards to the local market."
Both companies have already begun the process of applying for French licensing. They hope that their joint effort will stress their willingness to cooperate with French authorities.
The new French gambling laws have opened up the market to some degree but many find them to be non-compliant with EU regulations. Sure, France isn't the first country to flout EU rules but many worry that as the EU currency weakens the bonds of the alliance between the countries could suffer considerably should they not come to some sort of understanding with each other.
Until then companies like Microgaming and 888 Holdings will just continue to work together and make a place for themselves in the newly available market.
