Online gamblers in New Jersey continue to wait patiently for Governor Chris Christie to sign legislation that would make the state the first in the nation to offer their citizens legalized and regulated online gambling. Local legislators passed the bill with no problem, but Christie who is opposed to online casinos continues to put off making a decision on the matter.
"If Governor Christie signs the law, he would gain the support of millions of online gamblers across the US, and that would help him if he ever decided to run for a higher office," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "On the other side, Christie could lose some key supporters within his own party if he signs the legislation, so he may take as much time as needed to figure out his next political move."
While Christie continues to selfishly delay legislation, the state is still reeling from the loss of millions of dollars in revenue from Atlantic City casinos which have been hard hit by the recent recession. Atlantic City casinos would receive a tremendous boost from legalized online gambling and if the law is passed hundreds of millions of dollars are expected to be earned by the state in tax revenue.
Lawmakers across the US are watching the matter closely. If Christie decides to veto the bill, Florida could potentially be next in line to become the first state to offer regulated internet gambling.
