The Nielsen research group claims that online gambling was bigger in the UK last year than social media sites such as Facebook. Nielsen claims that 3.2 million Britons joined online gambling sites last year compared to 2.2 million people who joined social networking sites.
While some may disbelieve such data the numbers aren't particularly shocking for those in the online gambling industry. The UK has established itself as a leader in the online gambling industry in recent years and was one of the first to legalize the practice.
Nielsen says that middle age men drove the spike in numbers though women did represent nearly 46% of the overall growth. The most popular games enjoyed by Citizens according to the survey were online poker and bingo which should come as no surprise to anyone.
Despite the findings the US is still considered to have the largest online gambling market. It is hard to prove it however as the US government has yet to regulate the industry and many sites refuse to report just how many Americans they service.
The recent figures have caused great concern to those opposed to online gambling. Many who oppose Internet gambling sites fear that they are too easily accessible and in many ways that fear is confirmed by the numbers in the Nielsen study.
Whether the rapid growth of the industry is something to be praised or scoffed at one thing is certain, there is no slowing it down.
