George Maloof Jr., minority owner of the Las Vegas Palms Casino Resort and the Sacramento Kings NBA basketball team, found himself in a bit of hot water this weekend. Maloof Jr. was driving home from a friend's wedding Saturday night when at 11:36pm when he was stopped less than five miles from home by a traffic officer on suspicion of drunk driving.
Maloof Jr. told the Associated Press that he had only drunk four beers but that was apparently all it took. His blood-alcohol level registered 0.086, which is just over the legal limit. "I didn't feel I was intoxicated," Maloof Jr. told the Sacramento Bee in a telephone interview.
Police might have let him go with a warning but according to the officer he also made an illegal turn, was speeding 20 miles over the speed limit, and was driving without a valid license or insurance. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center where he was held until Monday.
Maloof has since issued an apologetic statement through his lawyers, "I was out at a wedding on Saturday night. I didn't feel I was intoxicated so I drove home where I was cited outside the entrance to my development....I take full responsibility for my actions and I can assure you it won't happen again."
