The Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas plans to reopen after a $35 million renovation. Hotel officials announced on Wednesday that the property will reopen in August and start accepting hotel guests on Sept. 1st.
The 1,037-room hotel closed its doors last November to undergo massive renovations. The extensive overhaul included a remodeled casino floor and lobby, complete with new marble floors and carpet accents from the multibillion-dollar Fontainebleau Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip. More renovations were planned but work on that project has been suspended due to cost concerns.
Lower consumer spending has hit Las Vegas hard since the Great Recession and hotels have been forced to reduce room prices in order to stay competitive. Visitors to Las Vegas have been gambling less and spending less on other forms entertainment. The longer the Plaza stays closed for renovations, the more it hurts their profits so it only makes sense that they would be in a rush to reopen their doors. The sooner they reopen the hotel the better.
