PokerStars will retain its gambling license despite the recent indictment of two of its founders by the U.S. Department of Justice. On Monday, the Island of Man's Gambling Supervision Commission met with PokerStars and came to the decision that the company would retain its license to operate there.
Island of Man Economic Development Minister Allan Bell MHK, said, "The current position is that PokerStars will retain its license in the Isle of Man - there is no reason to reconsider that."
The two accused PokerStars founders, Isai Scheinberg and Paul Tate were at the meeting. They are both Island of Man residents and though the FBI says that they are working to secure their arrest. Detective Chief Inspector John Mitchell, head of the island's financial crime unit, said, "We are fully aware of this investigation but we have not had any requests for assistance the US or Interpol." Mr. Bell took things one step further saying that any attempt to extradite the two island residents would have to go through the UK which they have an extradition agreement with.
Following the news, PokerStars said in a statement, "The company categorically denies the allegations brought by the US Department of Justice on April 15 and is taking all steps necessary to robustly defend itself, and the two named individuals."
If the two men are convicted they could each face up to 30 years in prison.
