The Polish Parliament has introduced a new measure which would allow for legal online sports betting. Online casino games would still remain illegal but online gambling operators would be able to offer sports betting as long as they register their domains as ".pl", conduct all transactions through Polish banks and host their servers within the country's borders. The tax rate on online sports betting would be the same as the rate levied on the country's land-based sports books which at 12% is one of highest gambling taxes in Europe.
The Finance Committee and Physical Culture (Sports) Committee have voted to pass the measure as an amendment to the country's current gambling laws. Jacek Kapica, Poland's Deputy Minister of Finance, told the Polish Press Agency that the law could go into effect as soon as this June. "We will have the next reading of draft in the coming meeting of the Parliament, then the Senate and then after 14 days the Act comes into force."
The land based sports gambling industry is in support of the measure. Totalizator Sportowy, the company that runs a monopoly on sports betting and lottery games in Poland, actually requested Poland's finance ministry to develop online sports wagering applications after the company reported a 20 percent drop in revenues last year.
