A new bill that would "ban smoking" at Macau casinos is causing a lot of confusion. Macau gaming operators requested a meeting with the Legislative Assembly to discuss the recent piece of legislation which has already passed its first phase of voting. The casinos expressed deep concern with several "contradictory" statements made in the bill which made it very unclear how they should operate.
The second draft of the bill said smoking would be banned from casinos in three years time but it also stated that casinos would be allowed to set up non-smoking areas for their players. It turns out that the government actually meant that casinos would be able to set up smoking areas that cover up to 50% of total public areas. The catch is that these areas must be created within one year of the law being enacted, which is too short a window for many casino operators.
It is unclear whether or not the casinos will get a chance to meet with the committee or whether or not the bill itself will be changed.
