Brendan Fevola is on the brink of financial ruin. The professional football star recently admitted to having an addiction to online poker, horse racing and poker machines. As a member of the AFL, Fevola makes around $200,000+ a year but it hasn't been enough to fund his expensive gambling habit. He currently sits with about $300,000 in outstanding debts owed mostly to bookies.
By coming out in the open about his addiction Fevola has excluded himself from receiving credit from bookies. Lions CEO Michael Bower explains, "Effectively, every bookie in Australia should now be on notice that they should not extend any credit to him, they should not bet with him."
Last week AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou attempted to counter rumors over Fevola's gambling addiction by saying, "I don't think that's necessarily true. There are players that like to punt, play poker. That doesn't necessarily lead to addiction. I enjoy the punt."
Fevola's confession has however confirmed many of the rumors that were floating around and stories about his gambling sprees have already begun to spread like wild fire.
Close friend and world champion poker star Joe Hachem recently said that he was unaware of Fevola's taste for high stakes internet poker. He says that he played home games regularly with Fevola and other members of the team but it was always at low stakes, "It was never big money. It was always just about the fact that we were together. We play for something small, just like $50 - it ends up being what we pay for the pizza and beers."
With any luck Fevola will be able to get back up on his feet. He is currently receiving personal and financial counseling.
