 Things got pretty heated in Minnesota yesterday as both gambling supporters and protesters descended on Saint Paul to express their opinions on a proposal to expand gambling in bars and racetracks across the state. Gambling is primarily restricted to Indian tribes at the moment but current legislation would allow bar owners and racetracks to add slot machines and pull tab games to their establishments.
While Minnesota bar owners argued that the legislation would provide relief to bars that are struggling with the economy and would create jobs for people in the area, the Minnesota Indian Gambling Association and other tribal casino interests said that the bill would seriously hurt profits at the state's Indian casinos and could result in massive layoffs. While bar owners shouted their praises for the legislation an estimates 1,500 protesters chanted, "Don't gamble with my job."
Curt Kalk, secretary/treasurer of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe commented on the matter saying, "What we would see would be simply a massive transfer of jobs and economic activity away from communities around casinos...the most dynamic economic engine that rural Minnesota has ever seen." He cautioned that if the bill were to pass casinos could lose up to 40 percent of its business to nearby racetracks.
Supporters of the bill however point out that the bill could bring in as much as $630 million in annual tax revenue to the state and that more gambling options would increase traffic at bars and restaurants, allowing them to hire more workers and invest in fixing up their properties. Over the past few years Minnesota bars have been struggling because of the down economy and Casinos have proven to be a godsend for those looking for steady work in the area.
The racino bill was supposed to be heard on Tuesday in a House committee, but the hearing was postponed because the committee chairman and lead sponsor of the bill called in sick.
