According to the Australian press, Queensland disaster victims lost almost half a billion dollars at casinos during the first three months of the year. Problem gambling support groups say flood and cyclone victims flocked to casinos looking to relieve stress and much to the chagrin of everybody the big jump in losses appears to coincide with the Federal Government handing out millions of dollars in support to victims of the disaster.
Queensland clubs have become a hub for crisis hit communities so it only makes sense that more people would be playing casino games. Studies show that the majority of the money was lost on pokies which brought in a whopping $4.9 million a day between January and March. The Gillard Government is currently in the process of making reforms to the gambling industry and pokies have been an issue of very fierce debate among Australian citizens. One bill is looking to put a cap on player's wagers and require players to set a specific amount that they will be allowed to wager prior to playing any games. While most players are against the idea, many legislatures hope that it will put a stop to compulsive gambling in Australia.
