Republican Senator Rand Paul has faced a political firestorm from many in the media lately. Paul an adamant supporter of libertarian ideals has expressed very strongly his opinion that people should be allowed to spend their money any way they chose without the government interfering.
The tendency to criminalize activities based on ethics rather than on the need for such laws is a common flaw amongst both parties. Paul has stated many times that community morals and ethics should discourage improper behavior and that having too many laws has actually led to a decline of morality not an increase in moral behavior.
While Republican social conservatives feel that the fact that a very small portion of the public could abuse online gambling is reason enough to ban the practice, Paul feels that isn't reason enough to deny everybody access. Car accidents occur every day but we do not ban automobiles, the analogy goes. He feels that laws which ban online gambling do nothing to help the problem and that a citizen should be allowed to spend their money the way they see fit without fear of legal repercussions.
The truth is there are no easy answers in life. Paul argues that personal freedoms should outweigh any moral dilemmas politicians might have. The government after all should serve the people and part of doing that is allowing them to live their lives as they see fit.
While Paul does not expressly advocate the practice of online gambling he is definitely against any legislation that interferes with the citizen's right to make their own choices. In the end Paul has gotten a bad reputation simply for saying that people have the right to do what they want. Who knew that was such a controversial subject in this country?
