Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for performance-enhancing substances. Volquez claims that he took the drug he tested positive for only to help him and his wife begin a family and was not aware that it was banned by the league at the time.
"As a result, I tested positive when I reported to spring training," Volquez said. "Although I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and have chosen not to challenge my suspension, I want to assure everyone that this was an isolated incident involving my genuine effort to treat a common medical issue."
The exact drug that Volquez tested positive for cannot be made public because of Major League Baseball's labor contract. However at the conclusion of each season a list is released that details the drugs that would result in a positive test.
The pitcher's suspension went into effect earlier this week. He is the first player since Manny Rameriz to violate Major League Baseball's substance abuse policy.
