Rep. Joe Barton announced in a press conference that he is planning to introduce a new piece of legislation that would legalize and regulate online poker in the US. Barton said that he hopes the measure will be able to pass both chambers of Congress this session and defended poker saying that it was a game of skill. He challenged those who felt that poker was a game of chance to put their money where their mouth is and play against world champion Greg Raymer who was also present at the press conference. Barton said he has already spoken with the several key members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, including Chairman Fred Upton and hopes to move a bill through the committee in the near future. Much to the joy of poker fans he also said that the bill is being finalized in consultation with the Poker Players Alliance (PPA).

The fact that the House Commerce Committee will soon consider the bill is a welcome relief for online poker supports. House Financial Services Committee Chairman Spencer Bachus is a strong opponent of legalizing online gambling and many believed that no such legislation would get a chance under his reign.

Several members of Congress said that such a bill is inevitable since millions of Americans already enjoy the game and the current law is frankly unenforceable. Now that more studies are showing that online poker is a game of skill and citizens are putting pressure on their representatives to fix the mess that the Department of Justice made shutting down popular poker rooms, more legislators seem to be willing to make an exception for its legalization.

Barton said that both Upton and Commerce sub-panel Chairwoman Mary Bono Mack are receptive to holding a hearing on the bill this summer and according to the PPA Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is "very interested" in crafting legislation.

With any luck, the bill will be passed by the end of the year, but for some players even that is not soon enough.
