River Casino Strong Opening But At What Cost

altRiver City Casino had a strong opening month according to figures released on Monday. The casino which opened on March 4th took in $15.9 million in revenue in its first month ranking third among all local casinos. It powered the region's gambling industry into its single biggest month ever according reports bringing revenue up 9% from the same month last year.

There is a catch though. It appears that some of that business at least in part came from other casinos in the area since every other casino in the area saw some lost business compared to last year. Revenue fell about 8% at Ameristar and Lumière Place, Casino Queen in East St. Louis saw an 11% drop, and even Harrah's Casino in Maryland Heights was off by 6%

It will be a few months before River City's true impact on the local casino industry pans out. Officials at Pinnacle Entertainment predicted that River City will take in about $17 million a month once it's fully up and running and so far their predictions have seemed to be spot on.

The question on everyone's minds though is how much of that $17 million will come from new business and how much will come from other casinos in the area. That is just something the Missouri Gaming Commission will have to keep their eyes on when deciding where to use the state's 13th and final casino license.
