Two former prosecutors for the Russian Investigative Committee and 10 others have been arrested in connection with a Moscow-area gambling ring. Officials announced that Dmitry Urumov and Vladimir Glebov were detained as part of a probe into the gambling organization. According to the Moscow Times, Investigators said the underground gambling ring was under the protection of by Moscow-area prosecutors and senior police officials. Ivan Nazarov, the gambling ring's alleged mastermind and his associate Alla Guseva were caught in 2009 and in exchange for turning state's witness against other officials involved in the gambling ring all of their charges were dropped. President Dmitry Medvedev has expressed outrage that the investigative committee and the prosecutor general's office for bringing the matter into the public.
Russian officials have taken a very strong stance against gambling over the past year. They have done much to combat the problem of illegal gambling but it seems like no matter how many times they shut down an illegal gambling destination another one seems to pop up just as fast. One has to wonder if they would just be better off using their resources to legalize and regulate online gambling throughout Russia.
