Voters in Saipan will once again have the opportunity to decide whether or not casinos will be built on the tropical island. This marks the third attempt by lawmakers to have casino gambling legalized through a popular vote and many lawmakers are hoping that the third time will be a charm.
Saipan has only twenty-nine representatives, so legislators feel that it makes more sense to allow voters to decide on the issue than it does to present the measure as a bill. Several lawmakers said that they support the initiative but that they would not have supported a bill because they do not feel it's right to force the casino on the island if the people are not behind it.
Casino gambling has proven to be very lucrative for other countries in the region and the substantial growth of Macau's gambling industry has been a source of envy for nations around the world. Saipan lawmakers have been trying for several years to bring casinos to Saipan but many have opposed the plan citing concerns about foreign companies coming in to operate the casinos.
It is still unclear whether or not the initiative will pass but if it does it will definitely be good news for casino operators.
As always, stay tuned to Casinofan for more news and updates.
