Malaysian gamblers breathed a sigh of relief yesterday when Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim announced that the Selangor government has no intention of following Kelantan's lead and outlawing lottery or other forms of gambling.
"We did not discuss this subject (the sale of lottery tickets)," he told reporters after chairing the state executive council meeting on Wednesday. "Neither do we want to introduce any provision with regard to what has been done. That is our stand at the moment."
Last week, the PAS-led Kelantan state government caused uproar when it banned the use of Big Sweep lottery tickets within the state. Not only did DAP chairman Karpal Singh call on the state to lift the ban but Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin lashed out at PAS over its gambling ban in Kelantan and ruled out implementing such a measure nationwide. Both reminded the state that federal laws permitted non-Muslims to gamble and disapproval over the measure has been high.
Now that Selangor has made it clear that they have no intention of banning lottery and other forms of gambling other states are expected to do the same.
