Korean tv personality Shin Jung-hwan was sentenced to eight months in jail on Friday for gambling abroad and attempting to evade authorities. The 36-year-old singer turned actor is reported to have gambled away millions at a casino in the Philippines and made up a story in order to establish an alibi.
Police first began to investigate into the matter when he was sued late last year for unpaid gambling debts and rather than step up and admit he had a problem Shin Jung-hwan made up a story about being in the hospital, even distributing a photo (pictured right) of him at a local hospital with breakbone fever symptoms in order to back up his claims. The media quickly caught on to the ploy, saying that it was obviously a self-fabricated story used to evade illegal gambling charges and before long the truth of the matter came to light.
Asked if he had any plans to fight the ruling, Shin said he would accept the court's ruling with a "gratifying" attitude. He very easily could have faced a lot more time behind bars and the proof of his crimes is a little overwhelming to say the least.
