South Carolina Looking to Overturn Ancient Laws Banning Gambling

altSouth Carolina may finally be rethinking their ancient laws about gambling. Since 1802, gambling and games using cards or dice including board games like Monopoly have been technically illegal even for charitable purposes and social events but a new bill could change that.

A House subcommittee has pushed a bill forward that would allow nonprofit organizations to use raffles to raise money and let players play at home poker games. In addition it would give residents the ability to vote whether or not to allow they would like to expand the laws.

The Poker Players Alliance has been pushing hard for gambling expansion in South Carolina. In 2006 the state raided a group of people playing in their Mount Pleasant home and arrested several people for playing Texas Hold'em including a 79 year old woman.

Opponents fear that by allowing social and charitable gambling the state will be planting the seed for more problems down the road. At a time when tax revenues are nearly crippled by the current economy new methods of generating revenue would probably be beneficial for the state but such things fall on deaf ears to those who don't want to listen to it.

Many residents of the area have complained about arrest records and massive fines they have faced just for playing a simple game of cards in their own home.

Hopefully the state can get their act together and fix the problem.
