The global media has been buzzing their praise for Team Spain. This year's team which has been dubbed the "Golden Generation" has finally brought the European country its long-awaited first win at the World Cup.
For many decades Spain has been the under-achievers of the football world, always failing to live up to expectations at major tournaments and always going home early complaining about the referees or their bad luck, but finally the tide has turned for the La furia roja.
"The national team is no longer a team of unlucky losers," commented radio station Cadena SER. "Now it is an accomplished team of winners."
Until recently the national team was treated with indifference, and even with hostility, in the Basque region and Catalonia, where many people saw it as one of the symbols of the hated centralist state. Making it on the national team was seen as less important in terms of achievement, identity and affection than the powerful clubs of La Liga. Things changed however when the Spanish team rose to victory at Euro 2008 and now with the World Cup under their belt the team is finally starting to garner some of the respect they deserve.
As sports daily Marca commented, "The present of Spanish football is glorious, the future should be bright."
The team is now heading home for a massive celebration. They will meet with the Spanish King and be formally congratulated by Prime Minister Luis Rodriguez Zapatero before embarking on a 3-mile bus ride among the masses of cheering fans.
Congrats Team Spain!
