The Nevada Assembly Judiciary Committee has approved a new bill that will allow the state to collect 75% of uncollected winnings from slot machines. When a player wins at a slot machine they are given a ticket which they can exchange for their winnings.
Under Assembly Bill 215, a winning ticket would have to be redeemed within 30 days or it would be considered abandoned, then the state and the casino keep the unredeemed winnings with the 25-75% split. Committee Chairman William Horne, the sponsor of the bill, said estimates on the amount that the state could expect to earn from unclaimed winnings range from $20 million to $50 million annually.
In related news, an amended version of Assembly 258, which would pave the way of intrastate online gambling in Nevada, was approved on Tuesday. The Nevada Gaming Commission will now begin the process of drafting rules to regulate online poker though no actual internet gambling will take place until it is sanctioned by Congress or the Justice Department.
Today is the deadline for Nevada lawmakers to address important issues. The bills that were not presented earlier this week could very well die without a hearing.
