Syria has shut down the country's only casino just three months after its opening in an attempt to appease conservative Muslims. The Ocean Club which was located 20 miles from Damascus was seen as a symbol of Syria's attempt to promote itself as a more secular and western friendly country. It was popular amongst Syrian, Iraqi and Jordanian visitors and was bringing in plenty of tax revenue but it has faced stiff opposition from religious groups who felt that gambling was immoral.
Large scale protests have been taking place across Syria with thousands of protesters calling for democracy and an end to the 40 year rule of the Alawites. More than 80 people were killed in a crackdown on protests earlier this month and now Syrian activists are calling for fresh demonstrations. President Bashar al-Assad is hoping that shutting down the casino and doing away with a law that bans teachers from wearing the Islamic veil will calm protesters down, but it's very unlikely it will help the situation.
At this time it is still unclear whether the casino is temporarily being shut down or if it has permanently closed its doors. The casino's staff was told that they were being let go until further notice.
As always, stay tuned to Casinofan for more news and updates.
