Taiwanese legislators have introduced a draft gambling bill which could bring casinos to the island. The issue is still a topic of fierce debate between those concerned about the drawbacks of the gambling industry and those who see it as an effective way to boost the republic's ailing economy. Just two years ago, a referendum concerning casinos was rejected by one of Taiwan's outlying islands but now that Matsu and Kinmen, two Taiwan-controlled island groups off China's southeastern Fujian province, have expressed interest in building casinos the ministry of transportation and communication plans to submit the bill to parliament for approval in September.
"Casinos are more than gambling," said Yang Suei-sheng, a top official from Matsu County's government. "It is an industry which can generate investment and lots of jobs."
It is estimated that the casino industry could bring in more than Tw$10 billion ($345 million) in added revenue for Taiwan and that it would provide hundreds of residents with well paying jobs. In the end, Matsu residents will still have the final say in the matter when a referendum goes up for vote later this year.
