The Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) has been on the defense since the recent United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC) Prevalence of Gambling survey came out last week. Many in the British media have attacked the popular online gambling jurisdiction saying that it offers less protection to its licensed online casino players than other jurisdictions like the UKGC.
The AGCC fired back this week saying it wouldn't be white listed by UK authorities if it wasn't protecting its players. The Commission stated that their online gambling sites offer the same protections as those licensed in the UK and that their customers have nothing to worry about.
Most of the heat the Commission was getting was in regards to how its licensees tackle problem gambling. Andre Wilsenach, the AGCC's chief executive, commented on the issue saying that the company puts close to £1 million per annum into the UK's GREaT Foundation and that the basic prerequisites checked before an online gambling license is issued include strong player identification requirements, obligatory self-exclusion systems, and the ability for staff and systems to identify problem gambling characteristics in player behavior.
Wilsenach said that the media has gone overboard on the issue of problem gambling and that they are misinterpreting data that is intended for experts and not laymen. He pointed out that the report itself showed a very small increase in incidence of problem gambling and that the volume of online gambling by British players was virtually unchanged.
He concluded by stating that Alderney is one of the better jurisdictions out there and that those in the UK should be focusing on protecting British players who wager at online gambling sites located in jurisdictions with ineffective regulations.
In truth, Alderney is one of the better ones out there, but it's likely that the statement will only fall on deaf ears.
