The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) will be leading a "Poker Lobbying Day" rally in Washington on Thursday. It will be the grass roots group's first attempt at organizing a rally at a state capitol building. PPA executive director John Pappas and more than 40 PPA members are scheduled to attend the event and the PPA is providing hotel accommodations and meals for those who make the trip to Olympia.
"People are coming from all around the state to lobby the legislature over the law in the books that criminalizes playing poker over the Internet," said PPA executive director John Pappas. "We are going to ask that they repeal that law."
The PPA will be upping their efforts to overturn the law which makes playing poker online a felony offense. Since 2006, they have been trying to fight the law through the courts but after losing in the district court, the appeals court, and the state supreme court they feel they have no other option then to try and galvanize voters.
Pappas cautions that changes won't take place in Washington overnight. He said that the rally is just an initial step in clearing up the misconceptions of legislators have that allowed the bill to be passed in the first place.
"This is our first foray into some intensive lobbying in Washington State," Pappas said. "We don't expect a change in the law this year. We're using this opportunity as a baseline-education process to build up for a possible introduction of legislation to be taken up during the next legislative session."
Washington State currently has some of the strictest laws against online gambling in the country. Even small changes could make a big difference for Washington players.
