Industry insiders were stunned to hear that the Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas would be shutting down for good this May. For more than half a century, the Sahara has attracted players from all around the world to the Las Vegas strip. The last remaining vintage "Rat Pack" casino-hotel in Las Vegas it is only one of three casinos left from the 1950s and it will be truly missed.
Many of Sahara's employees have been working at the resort for over three decades and now during these hard economic times they will be forced to search for work at another casino. Sam Nazarian, chief executive of SBE Entertainment Group, the parent company of Sahara, said that he would help the Sahara's employees seek new jobs but it is likely that hundreds will be unemployed come May 16th.
The Sahara has been unable to compete with the many newer lavish casino resorts in Las Vegas and the recent recession seems to have dealt the resort its final blow. With no recovery for the casino in site, the casino's owners feel they had no choice but to pull the plug on its operations. It is unclear what SBE plan to do with the site but it is likely they will sell it off and some company will knock the casino down to make way for a new one.
As always, stay tuned to Casinofan for more news and updates.
