Two thieves who stole an ATM card thought they had struck it big when they racked up about $25,000 in slot machine jackpots at a Southern California casino but they lost it all when their ploy was discovered.
Hung Nguyen (no relation to the Nguyen poker pros) and Eric Hoang are being accused of stealing some one's Visa debit card numbers and using them to buy gift cards at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula.
They transferred the cards into their names and used the cards to wager at the casino. They seemed to be on a roll snatching up several jackpots with the ill willed card but before they could claim their winnings police discovered what happened and they found themselves in the back of a police car instead of a limo.
Both men are now facing federal charges. Nguyen is being charged in Superior Court with grand theft, fraud and burglary and both were indicted last month for bank fraud, access device fraud, aggravated identity theft and related charges.
It just goes to show, that crime does not pay. Though the criminals attempted to cover their tracks they were not very subtle about it and casinos are not one to hand out money without asking any questions.
There has been no word on what will happen to the thieves' "winnings" but in this authors opinion it would have been the perfect irony if the casino gave the money to the cardholder who had his identity stolen.
