It's been exactly a week since the US Department of Justice cracked down on online poker and boy what a difference a week can make. While PokerStars, Full Tilt, and UB have all seen a steep decline in traffic, other sites which remain open to US players have received a serious boost and even some European poker sites have been benefitting from the situation.
UB was the heaviest hit by indictments. It's traffic was down a massive 53% and the fact that they took so long to respond to players has cause many to question whether the site will be able to survive all the court battles to come. Full Tilt was hit almost as bad having lost a staggering 48% of its traffic but because it has a large international presence changes are it will fare a whole better. Of the three sites, PokerStars was the least affected. Its traffic is down 24% but thanks to its huge international presence and its highly popular tours it should fair just fine without US players.
With few sites remaining for US players, Merge Network, Bodog Poker, and Cake Network have all seen double digit increases in traffic. Merge Network (which owns Lock Poker, Carbon Poker, PlayersOnly, and Sportsbook Poke) and Bodog Poker have both seen a 36% traffic increase and Cake Network saw a 31% traffic increase which would have been higher had Victory Poker not decided to pull out of the US market.
European players who now feel uncertain about the future of PokerStars, Full Tilt, and UB have also flocked to several popular European poker rooms. PartyPoker saw a 10% increase in traffic over the last week and iPokerNetwork enjoyed a 5% increase. Though the growth is nothing compared to that experienced by the poker rooms which chose to remain in the US it's doubtful that either of the companies is complaining.
