Treasury Holdings has submitted a proposal to the Ireland Department of Justice to build a €300 million super casino complex on the banks of the river Liffey. The company feels that its Spencer Dock site near Dublin port is an "ideal location" for the construction of a large scale casino. It claims that the development could attract three million visitors annually, create more than 2,200 new jobs in the Dublin region, and generate more than €40 million annually in tax revenue.
Treasury filed the submission together with an international casino operator but the name of the company has been withheld on the grounds of commercial sensitivity. According to the submission, the large-scale casino would be 50,000-75,000sq m in size and construction would cost between €250 million and €300 million. The proposed casino would include a hotel, convention center, spa facilities, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, a full scale casino, and a bowling alley.
The Treasury's submission is just one of 70 proposals that have been made since the former minister for justice Dermot Ahern, published proposals that would allow a single "resort" casino to be built in a prime location. Since the UK does not allow for larger regional casino resorts a major complex in Ireland would be likely to attract visitors from the UK and mainland Europe.
The new Government has yet to make a decision on the issue but it's likely they will touch on the subject sometime next month.
