The Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City is seeking approval from the New Jersey Casino Control Commission to introduce $25,000 betting chips. The move is just a small part of the casino's attempt to attract high rollers to their casino floor. Other casinos in Atlantic city including Caesar Atlantic City and Harrah's Resort already offer the high value chips for their craps and blackjack tables.
The Casino Control Commission is reviewing Tropicana's request, but it is not yet known when the issue will be up for a vote. Tropicana's table game revenue has been one of the few bright spots in Atlantic City's struggling casino market and they are hoping that the new chips will make things easier to for high stakes players.
"This is part of the strategy to make the game clean and quick instead of having someone carting chips all over the floor," said Steve Callender, Tropicana's vice president of table games.
$25,000 chips may seem ridiculously valuable but believe it or not they are small change compared to the "plaques" that some casinos offer at their table games. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa uses plaques as high as $100,000 and they aren't the only ones to cater to the super high rollers out there.
With any luck Tropicana will be able to start offering the new chips sometime this spring.
