American players should be cautious about any phone calls or emails they might receive from people claiming to represent Neteller. The Off Shore Gambling Association recently reported that a new scam is going around.
Unknown persons have been calling former Neteller account holders looking to steal personal information. They claim that they represent the prominent online gambling payment processing company and say that they can provide players with additional funds if they are willing to give out their person ID.
Neteller which pulled out of the U.S. market following the passage of the UIGEA has confirmed that they are aware of the scam. Online-Casinos.com received an e-mail from Neteller which stated,
"All former NETELLER account holders in the US have been contacted by NETELLER as part of the Approved Distribution Plan for residual account balances. A final notice was issued by email to registered email addresses on 15 - 16 July with the final acceptance date for receipt of withdrawal requests being 26 July 2009. Other than for requests already received and/or being processed, any contact after this date would not originate from NETELLER."
It appears that whoever has been running the scam has been partially successful but now thanks in part to diligent players the matter is being investigated. If you are a former Neteller account holder and you are contacted by these scam artists be sure to report the matter and save any numbers or email addresses which were used to contact you.
Remember vigilance almost always pays off.
