Washington, DC, could become the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to legalize intrastate online poker. According to the Wall Street Journal the city council has approved a budget last year which would allow the district's lottery to operate a poker website within the districts borders and the window for Congress to make an objection to the bill will expire on Thursday. Congress is so busy squabbling that it is unlikely they will object to the bill and if it goes unchallenged the lottery plans to start offering poker in select areas by the end of the year.
Poker Players Alliance (PPA) Executive Director John Pappas commented on the matter saying that while he didn't believe the market in the District of Columbia is large enough "to create a viable business" he does hope that as a symbolic measure it might help expedite Federal legislation.
While Washington, DC, waits for time to elapse, states like California, Nevada, and Iowa are still pushing hard to be one of the first to test pilot legalized and regulated online intrastate gambling.
