For nearly two decades the European Union (EU) has been protecting the names and reputations of some of Europe's top regional foods. The legislation which came into force in 1992 has kept companies from dealing with unfair competition and has allowed consumers to feel at ease knowing that their food came from a genuine source. Earlier this year, the Cornish pastry was added to the selection of dishes with special classifications and now William Hill is taking bets on what will be Britain's next protected food.
Red Leicester cheese is the favorite with odds of 5/4 and the Lancashire Hotpot (a lamb and potato casserole) is next on the list with odds of 3/1. Other foods on the list include Lincolnshire pork sausages (4/1), Bury black pudding (7/1), Scottish wild salmon (8/1), and Bakewell pudding (10/1).
With so many tasty options it should be interesting to see which the EU feels is the most worth protecting. Red Leicester is certainly a great choice but foodies everywhere are likely to rejoice if any one of the tasty foods qualifies for protection.
As always, stay tuned to Casinofan for more news and updates.
