400,000 lost jobs as thousands of casinos are shut down.
On July 1st, thousands of casinos, slot machine parlors and betting halls across Russia were shut down due to new restrictions. According to a new law, gambling businesses much relocate to four remote regions of the country. This new law put over 400,000 people out of work at a terrible time.
30 major casinos and over 500 smaller scale parlors were closed. Police searched the county to ensure that everyone was following this newly instated law. The law was passed three years ago and, despite complaints and its unpopular nature, it is just now being enforced. Four special zones on the outskirts of Russia, thousands of miles from Moscow, will now be the home of these gambling establishments.
The bill was originally made in order to weed out any criminal elements involved within the casino business. Now, with gambling halls being shut down, it’s assumed that most business will just be driven underground, making it more criminal than it already was.
The designated areas for the gambling establishments (Kaliningrad, the Primorsky region, the Altai region, and nearby Krasnodar and Rostov) have yet to be constructed on, meaning it will be months or years before major legal gambling resumes in Russia.
