With the nation's automakers restructuring their auto plants there are many former sites just sitting there idle waiting for someone to come along and convert the space. Penn National Gaming Inc. is looking to do just that. They are awaiting permission in the form of a state constitutional amendment to relocate their casino plans to a former auto plant in Columbus, Ohio.
The company says that they hope to build a $400 million Hollywood Casino Columbus at the former site instead of at the plot they already purchased in the Columbus' Arena District. If they can do that they will sell the 24 acres they had planned on building on and use the 123 acre former General Motors-Delphi Automotive site instead. This will provide the company with several advantages since the site already has several large constructions present and comes with additional space.
Models for the Hollywood Casino Columbus have already been presented to Ohio citizens and they have showed enthusiasm for the project in the past but it isn't apparent just yet how most of them would feel about a change in venue.
If everything goes according to plan the casino is expected to open in the second half of 2012. It will be a 180,000 sq ft complex with up to 4,000 slot machines at opening, up to 100 table games and 25 poker tables. Among amenities currently planned is a 4,000 space parking garage, food and beverage outlets and high end entertainment lounge.
Voting on the matter will take place May 4th.
