 Tragically a Russian lawmaker was killed on his way home from the opening of Russia's first casino since the new casino laws, Oracle Casino.
Nikolai Kotlyarov, speaker of the Krasnodar city legislature and his driver were on their way home from the event when along the 200 kilometer trip, they slammed into a parked car and were thrown against the guardrail, both dead on the spot. Investigators believe that a violation of traffic safety was responsible for the accident and have opened things up to further investigation, but with the tragedy still fresh on people's minds a number of things have been called into question.
Among these concerns is the government's decision to place casinos in remote areas. While it is unclear how many people will be willing to make the long trek to play at casinos, there is no doubt that Russian roads have become dangerous and that there will be an additional risk involved for players. President Dmitry Medvedev has even admitted the high road-accident rate is a national problem, having resolved in the past to make roads safer for everyone. So is it worth it to the community at large to take on this additional risk?
Those in the areas seem to think so. They hope to cash in on the additional business and use it to build up the surround areas. "There's a lot of gambling people here" in the region, said Valery Saparin, marketing director for casino operator Royal Time. "We hope that a lot of people will be drawn to us in the near future."
